On Tuesday, January 26, 2021, Twitter announced it has acquired the email service Revue for an undisclosed sum. Revue is an email service which makes it free and easy for anyone in starting and publishing editorial newsletters.

This acquisition will allow Twitter in effective utilization of its user base of writers, journalists, and publications that are in regular use of the service.

Twitter Product Head, Kayvon Beykpour said, “Starting today, we’re making Revue’s Pro features free for all accounts and lowering the paid newsletter fee to 5 per cent, a competitive rate that lets writers keep more of the revenue generated from subscriptions. Revue will give writers a way to monetise their audience — whether it’s through the one they built at a publication, their website, on Twitter, or elsewhere”.

Twitter, with the acquisition of Revue, is now in direct competition with Substack. Substack is an email newsletter service.

Revue was primarily founded in 2015 in the Netherlands.

Twitter, for revenue generators, said, “We’re creating a durable incentive model through paid newsletters.”

Twitter will continue investing in Revue as a standalone service, and Twitter team will remain focused on improvement of the writers’ ways in creating newsletters, audience building and work payment.

Beykpour said, “We’re also expanding their team and hiring for key roles across engineering, design, research and data science.”
